Historic Route 66 spanned 301 miles in Illinois, traversing mostly level terrain. From its beginning in Chicago, Route 66 headed southwest to Joliet, Wilmington, Dwight, Odell, Pontiac, Bloomington, Lincoln and Springfield.
From Springfield, Route 66 continued through Litchfield, Staunton and into Livingston.
When in the Livingston area, be sure to visit one of the most popular stops in town, the Pink Elephant!
Pink Elephant Antique MallThe Pink Elephant Antique Mall is located in the 3-story 30,000 sqft building which housed the Livingston High School from 1926 to 2004. The property, which sits on about 10 acres, is owned by Tonia and Wayne Pickerill. The mall's antique dealers offer wares such as jewelry, collectibles, glassware, memorabilia, candles, home goods and much more. The quaint 1950s-style Twistee Treats Diner serves burgers, nachos, sandwiches, ice cream and refreshments. It also houses The Mother Road Fudge Factory and Candy Shop, and the Area 66 Haunted School! Car shows and cruise-ins frequent the Pink Elephant. Plus, the Futuro UFO is a popular photo-op as are the bigger-than-life fiberglass giants including the "Uniroyal Gal" and the nearby "Beach Boy" and "Harley" man. Be sure to make plans to attend the Annual Route 66 UFO Festival at the Pink Elephant on August 23-25, 2024. It is located at 908 Veterans Memorial Drive in Livingston (see map below).
