Every traveler along Historic Route 66 has a special interest, whether it be museums, geography, vintage motels or just plain quirky attractions!
Many, like us, have a deep interest in classic, iconic service stations, gas stations and related businesses like car dealerships and repair shops. Our father worked at a Gulf Oil Station and a Pontiac dealership in the 1940s, and we remain fascinated by those business ventures that served visitors during those years.
Gasoline and motor oil were important commodities for tourists on Route 66, and for those seeking better times and places as they headed west. Although many were "name brand" stations operated by large national oil companies, others were small, "Mop and Pop" businesses.
The architecture, and themes, varied, and these subjects remain popular today for those connecting to earlier times in the past.
All eight states along Route 66 had gas stations and "fillin" stations. Many are gone, but some survive, like those shown on this page.

Dwight, IllinoisAmbler’s Texaco Station was built in 1933 at the corner of Route 17 and Old Route 66, and serviced travelers at that location until 1999. The station gets its name from longtime manager Basil “Tubby” Ambler, who operated the station from 1938 to 1966. Gas stations in those early years were styled to be homey and inviting to customers, as well as inconspicuous in their residential, suburban surroundings. This station definitely has that "cottage look and feel". The station operated as a gas station until 1999 and was an auto repair shop until 2002, when the owner Phillip Becker generously donated the station to the Village of Dwight. So, sometimes it is called the Ambler/Becker Station. The building, now a popular Route 66 Roadside Attraction, has been renovated and is now Dwight's visitor's and information center. Gay Parita Sinclair Filling StationThe original structure on this site was built in 1930 by Fred and Gay Mason. Fred named the station "Gay Parita" after his wife Gay. Fred's station burned in 1955, and ceased operation. It was later lovingly recreated by Gary and Lena Turner in 2005. Gary passed away in 2015, and the site is commonly known today as "Gary's Gay Parita". Barbara Barnes, Gary's daughter, and George Bowick continue to operate the station today. It is located between Halltown and Spencer, Missouri, about 25 miles west of Springfield, and 3 miles west of Halltown. Spencer Phillips 66 Service StationIn 1925 Sidney Casey walked 55 miles to purchase the "town" of Spencer for $500. From 1926 until 1928, he constructed a general store, service station, cafe and barber shop. Spencer was bypassed by Interstate 44 in 1961, and later saved in 2007. The general store was the first building built on this site in 1926. The garage was completed in 1927 and the café / barbershop in 1928. It is still located on all original Route 66 concrete. In June of 2022, Ed Klein of Route 66 World purchased the property and buildings to further continue the restoration and preservation of the buildings and property. His plans are to open it up to the public on a limited basis as his schedule allows. The plans include bringing the general store back to the 1930s era, with shevling and display cases while having a section serving as the Spencer Station's gift shop. The barber shop will be restored to function as a museum for items ranging from the mid 1880s until the late 1940s. The diner will be restored to its circa 1930s-1940s configuration. Today, the property has become a "must see" stop for Route 66 travelers, motorcycle groups and classic auto tours. The Phillips 66 gas pumps and island are a popular photo op for visitiors! We recommend a visit there on your next road trip!! Spencer Station is located about 24 miles west of Springfield and 50 miles east of Joplin. The official address is 19720 Lawrence 2062, Miller, MO 65707. See interactive map of its location below. Spencer Station Website and Spencer Station on Facebook

Threatt Filling Station and Family FarmThe historic Threatt Filling Station is located near the intersection of Route 66 and Pottawatomie Road, about 3 miles east of Luther, Oklahoma. The station offered African Americans a place to purchase food and fuel, as well as an opportunity for a respite from their travels during times when segregation was still in place. It offered a variety of services, including gas, oil, automotive accessories, groceries, cold beer and oil changes. The station building and a nearby bar were built by Allen Threatt Sr. on about 150 acres of property he purchased in 1915, land that the Threatt family still owns. The filling station was closed in the 1970s. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has included the Threatt Filling Station and Threatt Family Farm on its list of the 11-Most Endangered Places in America, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
