Route 66 Centennial: 1926-2026
In 2026, the nation will be celebrating the Route 66 Centennial ... the 100th anniversary of the Mother Road serving the traveling public! Route 66 was one of the United States' first continuous stretches of paved highway, and served as a major path for those who migrated west. "The Mother Road" was commissioned on November 11, 1926, and ultimately stretched 2,448 miles (3,940 km) from Chicago to Los Angeles. Many states and organizations are planning special events and tours to highlight the Centennial. In addition, the Route 66 Centennial Commission Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by the President on December 23, 2020. The Act creates a commission that will recommend activities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of U.S. Route 66 in 2026. It will consist of representatives from each of the eight Route 66 states. Members will recommend the production of various written materials, films and documentaries to commemorate the history of Route 66. Members of the Commission were announced by The White House on December 28, 2022. ![]()
