There are literally hundreds, actually thousands, of interesting stops, attractions and events along the eight states that Historic Route 66 traversed.

Different people want to experience different things on Route 66. And that is great! Along Route 66 from Illinois to California, there is a great diversity of festivals and events, from car shows to contests to special events at museums and historical sites.

The show is located on the pavement of Historic Route 66. It is now called Ogden Avenue, between Oak Park Ave and Ridgeland Avenue.

A popular stop on Route 66 today is the town of Carthage, situated between Springfield and Joplin. It features numerous Route 66 attractions and other things to do, and offers a variety of overnight lodging options for travelers.

Today Carthage is an energetic, thriving town of over 14,000 residents. In addition to Route 66 attractions such as the 66 Drive-in Theatre and the Boots Court.

The annual Crossroads Festival celebrates the junction of Route 66 and the Jefferson Highway in Carthage.

Kirkwood, Missouri

Route 66 Cars and Guitars Festival in Kirkwood, Missouri

The City of Kirkwood will host its Route 66 Cars and Guitars Festival in downtown. The festival's theme of "Cars and Guitars" speaks to the rich transportation and music history of the region.

Live music and vintage vehicles will anchor this outdoor event. Most of downtown Kirkwood’s numerous stores, locally owned boutiques, and restaurants will be open during the event.

Festival activities will be located on North Kirkwood Road and on the two blocks of Jefferson that intersect Kirkwood Road.

31st Annual Rolla Route 66 Summerfest
Rolla, Missouri

31st Annual Rolla Route 66 Summerfest in Missouri

“Route 66” Summerfest will be held June 6th & June 7th in Rolla, Missouri. This is the 31st year for this event. It was originally started to promote Downtown Rolla but has evolved into an area wide celebration for all ages to promote Old Route 66 and the beginning of summer.

Friday night kicks off Summerfest with a cruise down Route 66 from St. James to Rolla. The activities begin in the festival lot in Downtown Rolla with the Crazy Funny Dog Show, Drummers Competition and Movie Under the Stars.  There will be music in the food court from 4:30 pm until 8 pm, food and craft vendors will be open most of the evening.  There will be lots of children’s games and activities all evening as well.

Saturday starts bright and early at 8 am with the Car Show lining up on Pine Street in Downtown Rolla.  Hosting over 150 cars, spanning from Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and more, this is a great show that is growing each year.  The Arts & Crafts booths open at 9am along with the food vendors, kids activities, the famous “burnout contest” at 6pm and the street dance at 7:30pm. There are many other events all throughout the day.

Kansas

Annual Gearhead Curios Pin Ups on 66 Photo Shoot
Galena, Kansas

Annual Gearhead Curios Pin Ups on 66 Photo Shoot in Galena, Kansas

Gearhead Curios is located at 520 South Main Street (Route 66 and Jefferson Highway) in Galena in a restored Texaco filling station. The building was constructed out of native stone in 1939, and served Route 66 travelers for decades under the ownership of Logan Thompson.

The station closed shortly after 2000, but renovations were begun by Aaron Perry in 2018. In April of 2021 a neon lighting celebration was held. The official ribbon cutting was held on June 17, 2023, culminating five-year's worth of renovation and restoration.

Today, it offers Route 66 curios, artwork for the Gearhead and a place to gather to share stories. Plus clean, unique restrooms! The 1951 blue Hudson Hornet "Doc" parked there is a popular photo-op for Route 66 travelers!

This is a popular annual event for pinups and greasers, classic cars and photographers ... come have a drama-free, no winners or losers good time of taking amazing pictures on Route 66.

Annual Vinita Route 66 Festival
Vinita, Oklahoma

Annual Vinita Historic Route 66 Festival in Oklahoma

Join us in downtown Vinita, Oklahoma for a fun family event this summer! The 10th Annual Vinita Route 66 Festival will feature live music, food trucks and the popular Kids Zone Inflatable Park at the Friday night block party.

Gearing up for the Centennial of Route 66 in 2026, three central Oklahoma towns join forces to present a celebration like no other! The Route 66 Triple Tour rides into town on Saturday, June 10, with a day full of FREE festivities right on the Mother Road!

The Triple Tour starts in Warr Acres at 9 a.m. with a Car Show on 39th and Ann Arbor from 9 a.m. to noon. Enjoy antiques, hotrods and classics, as well as free face painting, bouncy houses for kids, and the Native American Color Guard.

Continue your cruise down Route 66 at Bethany from noon until 4 p.m. Downtown shops host sidewalk sales and antiques, while Bethany neighbors host a City-wide yard sale all weekend. Feeling lucky? Participate in the Poker Run! Or for younger Mother Road enthusiasts, enjoy the City of Bethany firetruck on display. Stop by the Broadhurst Building at SNU for a Vinyl Record Sale. The Route 66 Cruisers show off classic cars as they start in Bethany and move to Yukon to continue the festivities.

The Tour concludes in Yukon with “Get Your Flix on Route 66” at 7p.m. At dusk, enjoy a special outdoor movie screening off Route 66 and 4th Street. In addition, face painters and movie concessions will be on site with a variety of eats and treats!

The Mother Road crossed the Texas state line at Texola, OK, near Shamrock, Texas, and traveled through McLean, Alanreed, Groom and Conway on its way to Amarillo. From there it continued west through Vega and Adrian to Glenrio.

Route 66 totaled 186 miles across the Texas Panhandle, and is closely followed by today's Interstate I-40.

Kingman Route 66 Street Drags
Kingman, Arizona

Kingman Route 66 Street Drags in Arizona

Route 66 / Andy Devine in the middle of Kingman will be closed down for over a week! There will be a 1/8 mile drag race right down the middle of Ol’ 66! The organizers will build the track and event between Airfield Avenue and Fairgrounds (between Kingman Police Department past the DPS Station where the pits are located.

There will be three days of drag racing starting on Friday at noon and run until 9pm. Friday will be your chance to tune your ride to best handle the street.

Seligman to Kingman to Topock, Arizona

More than 800 vehicles carrying thousands of friends will be joining the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona for a weekend of adventure!

Historic Route 66 Fun Run participants from across the globe will meet in Seligman to travel a 140 mile stretch of Route 66 with events planned in nearly every community along the way.

The procession will conclude in Topock/Golden Shores with an awesome award ceremony to cap off the weekend.

The annual Historic Route 66 Fun Run traces its roots to early 1987 when a small group of people led by Angel Delgadillo embarked on an ambitious journey to champion the rebirth of Route 66 and formed the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona. 

Over the years, the continued success of the annual Historic Route 66 Fun Run has become an important fundraiser that has allowed the Association to aggressively pursue its mission for the preservation, protection, and promotion of the Mother Road. In many ways, it embodies all that we love of Route 66 - family, community, cars, and Americana. The Historic Route 66 Car Show is an annual event held in the charming town of Williams, Arizona. This two-day extravaganza showcases classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles, bringing together automobile enthusiasts from all over the country. The event promises a weekend full of excitement, nostalgia, and family-friendly fun.

The car show takes place in downtown Williams, right on the iconic Route 66. The event typically kicks off with a Friday night “Cruise the Loop”, where participants can show off their prized vehicles while driving down the historic highway. On Saturday, the main event begins with the car show featuring hundreds of vintage and custom vehicles on display.

Attendees can expect live music, food vendors, and various activities throughout the weekend. Hosted by the American Legion, Cordova Post 13.

For the 2025 show, the Route 66 JDM Classic welcomes ALL classic Japanese cars and trucks (2000 and older). Whether you own a Datsun/Nissan, Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Mazda, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Isuzu – or even a vintage Japanese motorcycle – as long as your Japanese classic is 2000 or older, we’d love to see you there!

“Mission Control” for the Route 66 JDM Classic is easy to find – Look for the Dairy Queen at 603 Historic Route 66. That’s where you’ll want to be Saturday morning to park!

Annual "Standin' on the Corner" Festival in Winslow, Arizona

This area was dedicated on September 11, 1999, as a tribute to the memorable song by the Eagles band that made Winslow, Arizona a town to sing about on famous Route 66. The Standin' on the Corner Park features a two-story mural by John Pugh and a life-sized bronze statue by Ron Adamson named "Easy".

The festival features food trucks, vendors, a beer garden, auction, live music and more!

Route 66 Cruz to Roy's Motel And Cafe and Car Show in Amboy, California

In 1926, Amboy became a boom town after the opening of U.S. Route 66. In 1938, Roy's Motel and Café opened and prospered due to its isolated location on the route. Roy's was later purchased by the late Albert Okura who worked to restore and revitalize the area.

Today, Roy's Motel and Café is a 24-hour gas station, gift shop, and famous tourist attraction, due to its 1950s Googie-Style neon sign that can be seen for miles approaching the town.
